終戦から一年後、満州の通化から故郷の静岡までの道のりを、二人だけで引き揚げてきた幼い姉弟がいました。

「キヨシちゃんの手を絶対に離してはいけないよ」

お母ちゃんとの約束をひたすら守り続けて、１０歳のいっちゃんは、６歳の弟・キヨシちゃんの手を引き、果てしなく続く中国の大地を、一歩また一歩と歩き続けたのでした。

二人の願いはただ一つ。 「お母ちゃんと会いたい！」

しかし、お母ちゃんはもう、この世にはいなかったのでした。

「死んじゃだめ。絶対に死んじゃだめ！」
幼い姉弟の生き抜く力に涙する。

１０歳と６歳。たった二人で、満洲から故郷の静岡へと引き揚げてきた70年前の事実を、80歳の「いっちゃん」が今、子供達に向けて語ってくれます。

こんな幼い姉弟が、どうやって日本にたどり着いたのか、過酷な状況は想像に難くありません。

しかし、苦難に見舞われるたび、二人はどんどん、たくましく強くなっていくのです。

「もう歩けない」と泣く弟を、「こんなところで死んじゃだめ！」
励ましながら歩み続ける十歳の姉。
最後には、弟が姉を助けるまでにたくましく成長していくのです。

主人公の「いっちゃん」は、この本に寄せて、次のように語っています。

この本を出版するにあたり、自分の過去と真正面から向き合うことになりました。
そして、胸の奥深くに眠っていた戦前・戦後の辛かったこと、苦しかったこと、そして悲しかったことが次々とよみがえってきました。

「もし戦争がなかったら」と狂わされた人生を恨み、「もし、お母ちゃんが生きていてくれたら」と悔しく切ない思いにかられ、そのたびに涙が頬を伝いました。

でも、この本を世に出すことで、全てが浄化され、本当の意味で私の中の戦争がやっと終わってくれるような気がしています。

「戦争」というたった二文字がもたらす犠牲の大きさ、傷の深さ……当時のことを思い出すと、胸が痛く、苦しく、涙が出て止まりません。
戦争というものは、「苦しみ」や「憎しみ」は生み出しても、決して「幸せ」をもたらしてはくれません。
戦争によって、たくさんの尊い命が失われます。

過去の戦争における多くの犠牲者のもと生かされている私たち、亡くなった多くの命のもとに今の平和があるということを決して忘れてはいけないのです。

私は、人間にしか与えられていない「話し合う」という知恵を使って、武器を持たない世界平和のために、戦争の残酷さを語り伝えていかなければならないと、今、心から思っています。

この本を読んでくださったみなさんが、学校で、家庭で、社会で、世界で、どうぞ「世界平和」を訴え続けてくださいますように。

祖国日本の土を踏むことなく亡くなった方々をしのび、その方々の分まで幸せを願い、感謝して生きていきたいと思います。

 

母の体験を子が執筆し後世へ。児童向けに出版

執筆は、長女の望月 泉さん。

「幼いころから母から聞いていた引き揚げの実話を本にして残さなければ」という長年の強い思いが実現し、このたびの出版となりました。

主人公のいっちゃんは、当時、10歳。今、10歳の子供達にもぜひ読んで頂きたいとの思いから、漢字にはルビをふり、わかりにくい言葉には解説を入れ、小学４年生が読めるように児童書として出版しました。

ぜひ、一人でも多くの子供達に読んでいただきたい本です。

英語版の出版にあたって

A PROMISE TO LIVE FORは、日本の敗戦から1年後の1946年、私の母・望月郁江（1936年生まれ、現・日本在住）が、10歳の時に6歳の弟とたった二人で、当時、家族で住んでいた満州から日本までの550㎞もの道のりを引き揚げてきた実話をもとに、長女の私（Izumi Mochizuki Greubel）が綴った物語です。
2016年に日本語で出版するやいなや（邦題『お母ちゃんとの約束』）、新聞などマスコミ各社でとりあげていただき、小学生から引き揚げ体験者の方まで多くの読者のみなさんから感想をいただきました。このたび英語版の出版を最も望んだのは、夫のトニーでした。引き揚げ体験者が高齢になる中、この本を日本だけでなく、世界中で読んでもらい、戦争の悲惨さや平和の大切さを訴えていく必要性があるのではないかと。私は夫の仕事の関係で海外赴任が多く、親戚、友人の多くは世界各地にいます。それらの多くの友人達も英語版出版の後押しをしてくれました。
翻訳は息子のダグラスが行いました。ダグラスはおばあちゃんからの依頼に誇りと喜びを感じ、一字一句大切に翻訳してくれました。
母が満州から引き揚げてきたのは10歳の時です。大人だけでなく、10歳の子供たちにもこの本を読んでいただきたい、そして、この本を通して、世界中の多くの方に戦争と平和について考える機会を得ていただけたら、それが私たちの本望です。
最後にーー。
ようやく英語で私の本を読むことが出来た夫の感想です。「義母の満州引き揚げの話は何度も聞いて知っていましたが、ダグラスが翻訳してくれたことにより、幼い子供二人が体験した様々な感情や詳しい当時の状況を知ることができました。この本を読みながら、幼い少女が体験した恐怖や飢えや疲労を共に味わうことができただけでなく、母親との約束を守るために必死に苦境を乗り越えていく信念というものが強く伝わってきました。義母に更なる敬意を感じます。お母さん、心から愛しています。」

A message from the author:

“A Promise To Live For” is a true story I wrote based on my mother’s childhood experience. My mother, born in 1936, was 10 years old when she and her 6-year old brother had to trek 550 km (340 miles) by themselves in Manchuria in order to go back to their homeland in 1946, one year after World War II concluded.

Immediately after we released the Japanese language version in 2016, newspaper, radio, and other media organizations in Japan ran multiple stories about the book.  Although the plight of the Japanese refugees in Manchuria was well known, most of the survivors have passed away now and so many people in Japan wanted to learn more through this first-hand, riveting account to gain a sense of the suffering caused by war.  The encouraging and supporting messages from the Japanese readers, including from some who faced the same hardships as my mother, showed that my mother’s story still stirred heartfelt emotions.   Based on this feedback, my husband, Tony, immediately encouraged me to publish an English language version of the book so that my mother’s story could be told worldwide.  Tony and I have lived in various countries due to his job so we are blessed to have friends across the world.   Many of these friends and relatives also showed great interest in my book once I told them about the Japanese version and also encouraged me to publish it in English to reach a wider audience.

My mother asked my son, Douglas, to translate the book from Japanese to English.  He was very honored and readily agreed to do so.  He did a wonderful job and I am proud of him.

It is my mother’s wish that this English version will spread her story from Japan to the rest of the world so that people of every nationality, including other 10-year old children, will learn about the horrors of war and do everything in their power to promote peace from their own households, schools and local communities to the entire world.

Finally, these are the thoughts my husband shared after reading the English version. “Although I had been familiar with my mother-in-law’s experience in Manchuria, I did not fully grasp the hardship and emotions she and her brother experienced until Douglas translated the book.  I could not only feel her fear, hunger, and exhaustion but also her determination and will to keep her promise to her mother in spite of all of the obstacles she had to overcome to do so. I admire and respect my mother-in-law even more. I love you, Iku, from the bottom of my heart.”

1966年、望月郁江の長女として静岡市に生まれ育つ。アメリカの大学院で中等教育学を学び、卒業後はアメリカの州立大学で日本語を教える。国際結婚をし、夫の転勤でワシントンDCを拠点にインドネシア、カナダ、パキスタン、中国などに駐在。幼い頃から聞いていた母親の引き揚げ話を、1冊の本にまとめるという長年の思いを実現。2児の母。

1936年（昭和11年）静岡市生まれ。1943年国民学校入学を機に、設計技師だった父親の仕事の関係で、父、母、妹、弟と満州の通化市に渡る。9歳で終戦をむかえ、翌1946年９月3日、10歳の時に日本へ引き揚げるため、6歳の弟を連れ、2人で通化市を出発。故郷の静岡に着いたのは、５週間後の1946年10月13日だった。その後、3人の子供、５人の孫に恵まれ、現在は夫と共に静岡市で平穏に暮らしている。

One year after World War II ended, in 1946, two young Japanese children, a sister and her brother, somehow defied the odds and survived a month long dangerous journey from the former Japanese colony of Manchuria in northeast China to their hometown in Japan.

Iku was only 10 years old. She and her 6-yr. old brother traveled 340 miles on land, mostly on foot, day and night, with little food, clothing, or money while holding each other’s hands. What kept them going every day? It was the promise that they made to their mother— “Never let go of each other’s hand and safely return to Japan to be reunited with everyone.” They simply wanted to see Mommy again.

This is a true story of war, not of who’s on the right side and who’s on the wrong side, or who was crueler than the other, but how war impacts people everywhere, including innocent children, like Iku and her siblings. Most importantly, this book demonstrates how love, courage and determination can see us through the most difficult times.

70 years after the end of World War II, Iku finally decided to let her daughter, Izumi, tell her story to the whole world, hoping her ordeal will play a small part in contributing to world peace. All the illustrations in this book are done by Iku herself.

Izumi was born and raised in Shizuoka-city, Japan. After graduating from university in Japan, she attended a graduate school in the United States and received a Master’s degree in secondary education. She taught Japanese at the University of Southern Indiana for ten years until her husband, Tony, was hired by the U.S. Department of State. Since then, they have lived in Washington, D.C., Indonesia, Canada, Pakistan/Japan, China, and Samoa. Izumi and Tony have two sons, Douglas at Virginia Tech (class of 2018) and Christopher at the U.S. Naval Academy (class of 2021).

Ikue was born in Shizuoka-city, Japan, in 1936. She moved to Manchuria when she was six years old with her family due to her father’s job as a civil engineer. She was nine years old when World War II ended in 1945. She and her little brother came back to Japan from Manchuria in 1946 by themselves after a one-month long dangerous journey. She married her husband, Takao, and they raised three children, Izumi being the first child. They also have five grandchildren; one of the five, Douglas, translated the original Japanese edition of this book into English. Ikue is living in Shizuoka-city, Japan with her husband enjoying their retirement.

Douglas was born in Evansville, IN, in 1996, and moved to VA/DC when he was 5 due to his father’s job. As a foreign service kid, he attended Mt. Daniel Elementary School in Falls Church, VA, Surabaya International School in Indonesia, Turnbull School in Canada, Matsuno Elementary School in Japan, Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, VA, and graduated from International School of Beijing in China. After high school, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and earned his undergraduate mechanical engineering degree in May, 2018. He will start working for Ford Motor Co., in September, 2018 as an engineer. He and his younger brother, Christopher, were raised bilingually in Japanese and English at home. He enjoys working on cars, scale models, and the outdoors.
